To begin his book, the Academy Award-winning actor sought solitude in a desert location with a pile of his old journals. In total he spent over 50 days alone writing his book which was released in October 2020.

From reading it, Peterson said he thought McConaughey was a man of integrity who was also a likable and optimistic person. He also made the point that Greenlights is not a celebrity memoir but more of an autobiographical meditation, a description that McConaughey appreciated.

Peterson added that there was very little Hollywood celebrity in the book; instead it was family centered — McConaughey is a married man, a father of three children — and a very intimate account of a life well lived.

Other items in their conversation include how McConaughey deals with the fakery of fame and why his favorite place in the world is the west African nation of Mali, where he said he feels at home, he calls it his ‘original home’.

Peterson, himself, also has a new book just made available — Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life.
