It may look a bit hokey by today’s standards, but disaster movie The Towering Inferno was nominated for best picture at the 1975 Academy Awards.
While best picture ended up going to The Godfather Part II, the Irwin Allen-produced film won three of its eight nominations with Oscars for best cinematography, best film editing and best original song.

The movie is considered one of the best of its genre for its era along with the likes of Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Earthquake (1974).
Starring mega stars Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, The Towering Inferno was the highest-grossing film in 1975.
