Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James star in the upcoming drama The Dig. Set in 1939 England, it portrays the discovery of the Sutton Hoo burial grounds which included the remains of a Saxon burial ship dated from the 7th century.

The heart of the film is the partnership between Mulligan’s character of Edith Pretty, a wealthy widow who owned the land at Sutton Hoo, and Fiennes’ amateur archaeologist character Basil Brown as they uncover the burial site.

According to local paper East Anglican Daily Times, the real-life excavators found in the buried ship a whole bunch of swords, shields, bowls, cutlery and a finely made warrior’s helmet that became a symbol of the Anglo-Saxon period.

The Dig is based on the 2007 novel by John Preston and it’s directed by Australian filmmaker Simon Stone.

The PG-13 film is set to have a limited cinema release on Jan. 15, 2021, and it will then be available via Netflix a few weeks later beginning Jan. 29.
