Hanks plays the lead role as prison guard Paul Edgecomb whose worldview changes after meeting prisoner John Coffey, a gentle giant with otherworldly talents played by Clarke Duncan
In the 2006 video Darabont says all those actors he first approached to be a part of The Green Mile said ‘yes’.
But casting for the role of Coffey was tough, mainly because Darabont said that the film’s success rode on finding the perfect actor who could do such a character. It was Bruce Willis who recommended Clarke Duncan for the part who they later discovered could express the pain of the world through his eyes.
The movie is based on Stephen King’s 1996 novel of the same name. In the video below learn how Darabont adapted King’s book for the screen.
