See the above trailer for the 1988 smash hit Rain Man which stars Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.
Directed by Barry Levinson the road comedy-drama film was the highest-grossing film of that year.
But it wasn’t an easy film to get made; i.e. it was shot during a screenwriter’s strike and, before Levinson, there were three other directors attached to it — Martin Brest, Steven Spielberg and Sidney Pollack.
Rain Man would go on to win four Academy Awards, including an Oscar for Hoffman, then 50, for his portrayal of Raymond an autistic savant.
Cruise, then 25, was ideal as Raymond’s self-centered brother, the driven salesman Charlie Babbitt.
The film’s Oscar nominated score was by then little-known Hans Zimmer.
If you haven’t seen Rain Man, then do so — it’s a solid example of 1980’s filmmaking at its best.
