Above is the first ten minutes of the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun which features Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell with his radar intercept officer, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards, doing some fancy acrobatics in a 14A Tomcat against some Russian MiG fighters.
No CGI in sight. All real aircraft and they end up landing on the real USS Enterprise aircraft carrier.

With all the hardware used, the US Navy was heavily involved in the film’s production and had a say in what went into the script.
Actor Matthew Modine was first offered the role of Maverick, but passed, saying it didn’t agree with his politics. Cruise, 24, then took the role, cementing him as one of the biggest names in Hollywood following the movie’s monster financial success.
Top Gun was directed by the late Tony Scott — younger brother of film director Ridley Scott — and was produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer
