Flashback: The Making of 1978’s Superman

Superman: The Movie wowed audiences worldwide when it was released in 1978.

Both a critical and financial success, Superman stunned filmgoers with its use of ground-breaking special effects and camera work.

They did “anything to make a shot work. It was all hand done,” says Roy Field the film’s optical supervisor interviewed in the above 30-minute video Making Superman: Filming the Legend.

The movie was a huge undertaking which took 19th months to shoot. It was also the most expensive film made up to that date. At the same time, they also filmed some three-quarters of the sequel Superman II which came out in 1980.

It was directed by respected action blockbuster Richard Donner also known for horror film The Omen and the Lethal Weapon series.

Donner is interviewed in the above video as are some of the ensemble cast members: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder along plus many others involved with the production.
