Unsung Heroes of Thai Cave Rescue

The world held its collective breath when a junior soccer team and their coach were trapped in a flooded cave system in Thailand’s north in mid 2018.

After they went missing, for nine days it was not known if they were alive or not.

After they were located it took a further eight days to get them all out.

While it was British divers John Volanthen and Richard Stanton who found the boys, the above film, 13 Lost: The Untold Story of the Thai Cave Rescue tells the story of some of the unsung heroes involved in the rescue.

“It is a fantastic story in the end. Hollywood would not come up with such a story and it’s real, the kids are out and alive and are healthy,” said one of the divers Ben Reymenants who features heavily in the film.

Other cave divers featured in the film are Ruengrit Changkwanyuen, Bruce Konefe, Vsevolod Korobov and Maksym Polejaka.

One diver — Saman Kunan, a 38-year-old former Thai Navy SEAL — lost his life during the rescue effort. Another rescue diver Beirut Pakbara died in December 2019 due to a blood infection he contracted during the rescue operation.

A statue dedicated to Saman is pictured in a still from the film below.
