A Hidden Life: Being Light in Darkness

A Hidden Life is being hailed as Terrence Malick’s finest, and most powerful, film since 2011’s magical The Tree of Life.

Set in Austria during the reign of the Nazis, the meditative A Hidden Life tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, a pious Catholic who stood faithful to his convictions despite the ultimate cost.

Released in December, the 174-minute long film has been greeted warmly, often, for its powerful message.

Refusing to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler, the mild, kindhearted yet brave Jägerstätter was executed by guillotine in 1943. He was 36 years of age.

Jägerstätter is considered by the Catholic Church as a martyr (witness in Greek) and he is currently being considered for sainthood.

In the movie, Jägerstätter is played by German actor August Diehl who is well known internationally for playing the role of a Gestapo major in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Austrian actress Valerie Pachner plays his wife, Franziska Jägerstätter. See them both talk about their experiences making the film in the video above.
