Singalong: The Sound of Music

Most of the six million people visiting the picturesque Austrian city of Salzburg each year are die-hard fans of The Sound of Music.

Proof that after more than 50 years after it was made, the musical continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many fans around the world.

Based on a true story The Sound of Music broke box office records and won five Academy Awards in 1965. The film was the highest-grossing film that year.

A key part of the film’s success was Julie Andrews who was 28 years old when she played the role of the musically minded free-spirited nun named Maria.

The English beauty played opposite Canadian actor Christopher Plummer who was then 34 years of age playing Captain Georg von Trapp. The real life von Trapp was 25 years her senior.

Before it was on the big screen The Sound of Music was a Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway stage musical with its first performance in 1959. See a collection of more songs below.
