Thumbs Up (Mostly) For Spidey 2017

Spider-Man: Homecoming is completely different from earlier movie versions of the web-slinger made in the past few decades and reviews for it have largely been favorable.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming is the sixth Spider-Man movie since Sam Raimi made his first version starring Tobey Maguire in 2002.

More broadly, Spider-Man: Homecoming is the 16th movie to come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Tom Holland plays Peter Parker/Spider-man while other familiar faces include Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes/the Vulture.

A sequel is planned and is expected to be released in 2019.

JUDGEMENT

“The makers of Homecoming had a tricky tightrope to walk: over-Marvel the pudding and it becomes another Avengers movie, but underdo it and it’s just another Spidey reboot. The balance is pretty much spot-on, with the familiar faces treated as sprinkles on the ice cream sundae. Robert Downey Jr. literally phones in most of his performance, but in the best possible way.” Nick De Semlyen, Empire

“Simply put, Homecoming is the best Spider-Man film in years, on par with the sacred Spider-Man 2, in my opinion. Marvel has certainly proved that Spider-Man is safe in their hands. A couple of interesting twists at the end of the film indicate that Marvel is planning to take their Spider-Man down an unfamiliar path, the only direction to take a character so wildly overused.” Dani Di Placido, Forbes

“A little of the new Spider-Man went an exhilaratingly long way in Captain America: Civil War last year. But a lot of him goes almost nowhere in this slack and spiritless solo escapade, spun off from an initially intriguing premise that deflates around you with a low whine as you watch, like a punctured bouncy castle.” Robbie Collin, Telegraph

“Patient Spider-Man fans have been waiting 10 years for a story that’s worthy of Spider-Man’s legacy — one that’s as much about the heart and soul of its hero as it is about slinging and swinging through the city sky. And with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which brings Marvel Studios back into the Spider-Man fold as a co-producer with Sony, that story is finally here. The movie is a soaring, fearless teenage dream. And it feels so great to be able to say: Welcome home, Spidey.” Alex Abad-Santos, Vox

“In fact, there are pleasant surprises scattered throughout; if you want in on the fun, you may want to stay off the film’s IMDb page. As Hollywood doubles down on the reboot biz, Homecoming is proof that even a story that’s been told countless times before can be spun into something at once intimate and universal.” Brian Raftery, Wired

“Whereas Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man movies are superhero soap operas that push Peter Parker’s school experience to the background, Spider-Man: Homecoming takes the opposite approach and operates as a high school film first, MCU adventure second.” Sandy Schaefer, Screenrant

“The best word to describe Spider-Man: Homecoming is “fun.” It’s a joyous, effervescent picture that may not have the thematic heft of darker pictures like Logan and The Dark Knight, but nevertheless forges its own identity within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a hefty helping of the MCU’s primary virtue: humor. It’s a movie that will have you laughing throughout even though it’s not technically a comedy.” Matt Goldberg, Collider
