For balance, we try to find one or two positive reviews – if they are well written enough – but that proved somewhat difficult for the likes of this year’s Fantastic Four reboot.
The moody and spiritless trailer didn’t promise much so we weren’t stunned when the awful reviews began rolling in. See the trailer here:
The movie was plagued by difficulties and there were reshoots done without the presence of the director Josh Trank (who made the successful Chronicle) which is never a good sign. Anyway read the reviews, just avoid the movie.
JUDGEMENT
“It not only scrapes the bottom of the Marvel-movie barrel; it knocks out the floor and sucks audiences into a black hole of soul-crushing, coma-inducing dullness. And, guess what, it’s an origin story. That’s right. A gifted young cast (Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan) has been hired to freshen the plot, like an old whore trying to pass as jailbait. No go.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“I have no idea why this movie is so terrible, only that it is terrible, and there is no joy in noting the terribleness of a film. A lot of people spent a lot of time and energy on the Fantastic Four and the result just sort of lies there.” Matt Zoller Seitz, rogerebert.com

“Just like you should never kick an injured puppy – or a healthy one, for that matter – you actually find yourself desperately hoping to find some positives in a movie that has already been roundly booted all over the international press. Can it really be that bad? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’.” Chris Newbould, The National

“A lousy script, unfocused direction, incoherent editing, shockingly terrible special effects — and, probably, panicked studio executives — have left its four talented stars muddling through a dull superhero origin story with zero payoff.” Lou Lumenick, New York Post

“If Fantastic Four is pleasantly different in its introductory segment, once those super powers kick in, the whole film goes into a more standard gear. We’ve seen it all before, and it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing it all again as well.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
