Flashback Trailer: Highlander

Rewatching the fantasy action film Highlander can be confronting if you were a fan when it was first screened in 1986. Some may say it hasn’t aged well and is corny, loud, and cringy in parts by modern standards.

Yet it has some fantastic moments — a nod here to Sean Connery as the flamboyant Ramírez for lifting it a level or two.  Highlander is still worth seeing if you haven’t, especially if you get the chance to see the 4K restoration version released on the movie’s 30th anniversary.

The film’s story — about immortals battling through the centuries — was also original for its time. Christopher Lambert’s portrayal of Connor MacLeod and Clancy Brown’s menacing Kurgan are often highlighted as strengths, as is the rock-driven soundtrack by Queen.

The movie’s catchphrase, “There can be only one,” also became iconic.

The idea and the film’s cult status spawned a franchise — several forgettable sequels, multiple TV series, cartoon series, etc. Now there’s talk of a reboot with John Wick director Chad Stahelski expected to be at the helm.
