A Hidden Life is based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian conscientious objector during World War II.
Jägerstätter refused to fight for the Nazis and was subsequently executed in 1943 for treason. He was 36 years of age.
A peasant farmer of strong religious faith, Jägerstätter was a husband and father of three girls.
Decades later he was declared a martyr and beatified by the Catholic Church.
