This video from Cameron Beyl’s The Directors Series looks at the experimental filmmaking style of director Terrence Malick.
Most of the video above focuses on Malick’s two historical films The Thin Red Line which screened in 1998 and The New World in 2005.
It does an awesome job in breaking down Malick’s creative process but doesn’t shy away from showing how challenging it was for others.

Malick’s style was so experimental and on-the-fly that many of his collaborators in these films — i.e. actors, editors and composers — found it difficult to cope with such a modus operandi.
The New World composer James Horner said he would never work with Malick again after what he experienced. But others such as actors Christian Bale and Sean Penn must have respected the process given they both starred in multiple Malick films..
Outside of any chaos his artistic style may have created for others, his films were visually arresting and soulfully ambitious. For an indication of that watch the trailer for The Thin Red Line below.
